Joan M. (Sabol) Sokolowski, 87, of Natrona Heights, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at her home with her family by her side. She was born February 25, 1929, in Nanticoke PA, the daughter of the late Andrew and Theresa Grozio Sabol. Joan was a graduate of the Geisinger School of Nursing in Danville PA. She retired in 1990 after 40 years of service from Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, where she worked as the Head nurse in unit 2E. Joan touched many of her patients with her comforting and compassionate care. She was a member of Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament R.C. Parish, Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Natrona Heights, where she assisted in CCD classes for many years. She was a volunteer for the Highlands Area Meals-on-Wheels. Joan enjoyed her card club, bible study, going to daily mass and traveling with her husband and family trips to the beach. She also sacrificed and devoted her time for 5 years as a caregiver for an ill neighbor. She touched the hearts of many with her kindness and had a special place in her heart for her granddaughter Alyse and her fiance Joseph Zylinski who took care of her during her recent illness. Joan is survived by her children, David (Anna Mae) Sokolowski, of Natrona Heights and Lynne Williams, of Gibsonia; eight grandchildren, Alyse Sokolowski (Joseph Zylinski), Nicole McBride, John Williams, Jamie Michael, Andrea Sokolowski, Magdalena Huybrecht, Matthew Sokolowski and Dana Sokolowski; and by her 15 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Casimir R. 'Sam' Sokolowski on December 16, 2014; and by her daughter, Jean Sokolowski. Joans love, friendship, generosity and dedication to her family and friends will forever be etched in our hearts. Friends will be received on Saturday from 2-7 PM in the Cicholski-Zidek Funeral Home, Inc., 1522 Carlisle St., Natrona Heights 724-224-8688, where a blessing service will be held on Monday at 1:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 PM in Most Blessed Sacrament Church with her pastor the Rev. James Mazurek as celebrant. Entombment will be in Mt. Airy Cemetery Mausoleum, Natrona Heights. In lieu of flowers. contributions in memory of Joan may be made to Highlands Area Meals-on-Wheels, P.O. Box 395, Natrona Heights, Pa. 15065 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 255 North Michigan Ave., Fl 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
