Valarie Christine Walters of Tarentum, born on March 8 th , 1953 passed away on March
11th, 2022 after a long battle with dementia. Valarie, also known as “Bean” by those
closest to her, frequently dealt with the misspelling of her first name. She was the
daughter of the late Betty (Johnson) and Michael Chick, Sr., and was the middle child of
seven. Valarie graduated from Highlands High School in 1971 and was married to Paul
Walters, Jr. for 44 years, with whom she had two children: Kate and Jeffrey. Bean had
seven grandchildren who were unquestionably the light of her life. She always loved
going on vacations to the ocean with her family and relished every opportunity to bask
in the warm sun. She had perfected the art of holiday planning; usually commencing her
Christmas preparations in early summer. Her culinary skills were utterly unparalleled,
though she would always paradoxically claim to dislike her own cooking. Bean was a
creative genius who handmade all of her children’s Halloween costumes as well as
crafting her own holiday decorations. She was a great admirer of nature, maintaining
multiple bird feeders around her house and feeding all of the natural wildlife that
enveloped her rural Fawn Township home; even the bears that once arrived
unannounced and frightened her. She was also a prolific gardener, who could bring
even the most temperamental species to flowering.
Bean is survived by her loving and devoted husband Paul Walters Jr., her two children
Kate (Justin) Sarra and Jeffrey James Walters; along with her six siblings, Audrey
(Paul) Brennecke, Olive “Faye” (Dennis “Denny”) Cochran, Michael (Marcie) Chick Jr.,
Jeffrey (Isabel) Chick, Gina (Alvin “Chip”) Miller, Angie (James Olberding) Thompson;
and most important to her, the seven grandchildren who brought her so much
happiness and whom she loved so dearly, Cecily, Julien, Carys, Fisher, Beckett,
Sascha and Katina. A private remembrance event shall be arranged at a later date. In
lieu of flowers, please make donations to the University of Pittsburgh Alzheimer’s
Disease Research Center (www.adrc.pitt.edu).
